QUESTION 21

What Makes My Business Different When Everyone Sells the Same Thing?

Peter Anthony beside an infographic: 100 things you do well, 10 that matter, 1 difference

I have trained people on three continents since 1988. Tens of thousands from the stage, hundreds one to one.

I have never met a business owner without a real difference. Not once.

I have met hundreds who could not say what it was.

Your difference is not in what you sell. It is in how you do it, and most owners have stopped noticing.

That is the problem behind most marketing that sounds like everyone else's. The owner is too close to their own work to see it. What they do well feels normal to them, so they describe the category instead of themselves.

"We do quality work." "We care about our customers." So does everyone.

The difference lives in how you do things. That is where it shows. So here is the exercise I have run with owners for years.

Write down everything you do well. Not just the service. The way you answer the phone. How you explain a quote. What you notice that others miss. Push to a hundred, no matter how small each one feels.

Pick your top ten. Only from that list.

For each one, write how you do it and what the customer feels. Relieved? Taken care of? Certain? That feeling is what they are paying for.

Lay it out and a theme appears. That theme is your difference. Everything else is a way of delivering it.

Release Works is a good example. Michael Sudbury built a trademarked pain-recovery method. That is a real difference. But a method only matters if people searching for relief can find it and trust it.

So we built a digital presence with the same authority as the work: a high-end site, search content that meets people at every stage of healing, and a clear path to a booked call. Someone who has tried everything is slow to trust. A site that answers their real questions makes the next step feel safe.

The difference was always there. Now it is visible.

AI makes this more urgent, not less. Point it at a business with no named difference and it produces faster average. Point it at a clear standard and it becomes an extension of you.

What would your customers say you do that nobody else bothers to?
